Allegations of Corruption in a ₹571 Crore Project
Delhi News (Media House), New Delhi. Former Delhi cabinet minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader Satyendra Jain is once again facing serious legal troubles. The Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) has filed an FIR against Jain concerning allegations of bribery linked to a ₹571 crore CCTV project, which is said to involve significant corruption.
Previously, Jain had spent several months in jail due to corruption charges and was released on bail shortly before the assembly elections. New allegations have emerged, claiming that he accepted a bribe of ₹7 crore to waive ₹16 crore in liquidated damages imposed on Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for delays in installing 1.4 lakh CCTV cameras across 70 assembly constituencies in Delhi.
In response to the FIR, former Delhi Chief Minister and opposition leader Atishi has labeled the action against Jain as politically motivated. She expressed her concerns on social media, stating that when investigative agencies abandon their duties to pursue political vendettas at the behest of their superiors, it undermines their integrity. Atishi accused the agencies of operating under government pressure and suggested that the actions taken against Jain are driven by political animosity.
Devendra Yadav, president of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, praised the ACB's actions, asserting that Jain had engaged in massive corruption regarding the installation of CCTV cameras in the capital. He emphasized that the Congress party had consistently raised concerns about this issue. The FIR against Jain for allegedly accepting ₹7 crore in bribes related to the ₹571 crore project has validated Congress's claims.
Virendra Sachdeva, president of the Delhi BJP, welcomed the ACB's registration of the FIR against Jain, stating that this is just the beginning and that many more cases will emerge that the Arvind Kejriwal government has attempted to suppress or delay investigations into. Sachdeva noted that in 2017-18, the Kejriwal government awarded a ₹571 crore contract to BEL for CCTV installation, which led to a ₹16 crore penalty for delays imposed in 2019. Shortly thereafter, Jain allegedly waived this penalty after receiving ₹7 crore. Complaints regarding this matter had been raised by various departmental sources, including the then-president of Delhi BJP, Manoj Tiwari, which ultimately led to the ACB's involvement.
