After the acquisition by the Tata Group in 2022 Air India has been going through a major transformation. According to media reports the airline is planning to purchase around 50 wide-body aircraft including Airbus A350 and Boeing 777X models for its international operations.
Major Aircraft Purchase
According to a Reuters report Air India is in discussions with the U.S.-based Boeing and Europe’s Airbus for the acquisition of 30 to 40 wide-body aircraft may be more than 50 units. Report also claimed that negotiations are ongoing and a final decision is expected to be taken by June when the Paris Air Show will be held.
Last year Air India finalized agreements to purchase 470 aircraft including 100 smaller planes from Airbus. The airline now plans to expand its fleet with wide-body jets to expand in the international market.
Air Travel Demand
Air India’s expansion strategy is planned when the demand for international and domestic travel is increasing. According to ICRA a Moodys local rating agency international travel from India is expected to grow by 15-20% by March and domestic travel may rise by 7-10%.
Considering this demand Air India has already given orders for 50 Airbus A350 10 Boeing 777X and 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. However due to the high global demand for smaller aircraft getting slots for wide-body jets has become a challenge.
Air Indias Challenges
After the acquisition Tata Group has made several changes in Air India;s operations. However delays in aircraft deliveries is a big challenge to its airlines growth. Currently only 43-44% of Indian outbound travelers take Indian airlines whereas others opt for foreign carriers. So Air India still has a larger opportunity in this market.
In addition to new acquisitions Air India is also revamping its fleet. The airline and its subsidiary Air India Express may receive 20 aircraft this year.
