Late actress Sridevi who was the first lady superstar of Indian cinema was known for bringing her characters to life with her incredible acting skills. One of the most memorable films of her career is Sadma (1983) a film that left a lasting impact on Indian cinema. Directed by Balu Mahendra Sadma was the Hindi remake of his own Tamil film Moondram Pirai (1982) in which Sridevi and Kamal Haasan played the lead roles. However not many know that Sridevi wasn’t the first choice for Sadma. Sadma Was First Offered To... Initially the role was offered to Dimple Kapadia but she had to turn it down because of scheduling conflicts with her other film Saagar (1985). Sadma was an emotional drama featuring Kamal Haasan and Sridevi while Saagar was a romantic love triangle starring Dimple Rishi Kapoor and Kamal Haasan. Both films became popular in their time but Dimple chose Saagar over Sadma. The decision was significant because Sadma was a deeply emotional and critically acclaimed film. However Saagar directed by Ramesh Sippy helped boost Dimple’s career and her performance was widely appreciated by both audiences and critics. Even though Sadma went to Sridevi making it one of the most iconic films of her career Dimple Kapadia’s choice to star in Saagar also proved to be a turning point in her film journey.
