Recently a news has been in a lot of discussion. It is reported that from April 2025, banks across India will open only 5 days. The media report said that RBI has come a new regulation for this. This report has made the attention of all the people. After which the discussion has started whether the banks will be closed all four Saturdays and Sundays from next month.
However, PIB has investigated this claim and described it as fake news. According to PIB Factcheck, "A media house reports claimed that from April, banks across the country will work 5 days a week after a new regulation issued by RBI. Pibfactcheck: This claim is fake. Media reports claimed that a regulatory decision taken by RBI will only lead to banking for five days in the week. Which means that banks will no longer work on Saturday. The report states that from April 2025, banks will follow the same schedule as government offices, where there is a holiday on Saturday and Sunday.
The Reserve Bank of India has not yet formally announced that the banks will turn into five-day work weeks. Working on the first, third and fifth Saturdays of the month is still part of the current banking work pattern.
However, there has been continuous discussion between RBI and Indian Banking Association (IBA) on 5-day Working Week for banks. Banking unions are arguing to reduce the weeks as it will better balance the professional and personal life of the employees and in line with the global banking norms.
Apart from national and regional holidays, bank branches remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. Bank branches are open on the first, third and fifth Saturdays of the month. Sundays are non-work days for all banks. Although the RBI has not confirmed any changes, the proposal of 5 Day Week is going on between the banking unions and the officials.
