Did You Know Salman Khan's 'Sikandar' Director Gave Bollywood Its 1st Rs 100 Cr Blockbuster?

After the underperformance of Tiger 3 and failure of films like Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan, Antim, Dabangg 3, Salman Khan is all set to make a blockbuster comeback at the box office with the mass action entertainer Sikandar.

Directed by renowned Tamil filmmaker AR Murugadoss, Sikandar also stars Rashmika Mandanna, Sharman Joshi and Sathyaraj among others.

Fans have high hopes from the film considering it is directed by AR Murugadoss who gave Hindi cinema its first Rs 100 crore blockbuster 17 years ago.

Bollywood’s 1st Rs 100 Crore Grosser

Back in 2008, AR Murugadoss made his Hindi film debut as a director with Aamir Khan’s Ghajini was a remake of the filmmaker’s own 2005 film of the same name which in turn was loosely inspired by Christopher Nolan’s Memento.

Also starring Asin, Jiah Khan and Pradeep Rawat, Ghajini shattered all records at the time of its release and became the first Rs 100 crore grosser of not just Hindi but Indian cinema as well.

The film made Rs 114.10 crore in India and Rs 194.58 crore globally on a budget of Rs 52 crore.

After Ghajini, AR Murugadoss made two more Hindi films with varied box office results.

While Ghajini was a remake of Ghajini (2005), Holiday was a remake of Thuppakki (2012) and Akira was a remake of Mouna Guru (2011).

It has been rumoured that Sikandar is a remake of Murugadoss’ own 2018 film Sarkar but the filmmaker as well as the producers have refuted the same clarifying that the upcoming Salman Khan starrer is an original film.

Sikandar releases in theatres on Sunday, March 30, 2025.
