The flu strikes millions of individuals worldwide each year.  It is much more than a seasonal annoyance, with over 1 billion instances every year, including 3 to 5 million severe cases.  The flu, which is sometimes mistaken for a simple cold, may cause major disruptions to your daily routine and professional life.  The best defense is vaccination, although many individuals choose not to get one because of ignorance and false beliefs.

Particularly vulnerable to the flu are working professionals.  The flu may affect both your personal and professional lives, regardless of whether you work in a large office or a factory in a smaller town.  Many individuals continue to report to work while unwell, which not only reduces their productivity but also exposes others to the flu.  The expenses of medication, medical appointments, and potential hospital stays may all mount up.

“Workplace productivity may be impacted by the flu,” said Dr. Jejoe Karankumar, Medical Director of Abbott India.  Raising awareness about flu vaccines is crucial in India, where infectious illnesses are already putting strain on our healthcare system.  Vaccination strengthens your body’s defenses against the flu.  It’s a public health measure that may lessen the economic and societal issues brought on by flu epidemics; it’s not just about protecting yourself.

Even though the flu vaccine is still relatively new in India, raising awareness may help more individuals take advantage of its protection.

Additionally, “Vaccination is one of the best ways to protect yourself from the flu,” said Dr. P. Vishnu Rao, Infectious Disease Specialist at Apollo Hospital in Hyderabad. The flu shot is safe, effective, and is updated annually to reflect the latest strains of the virus.  The vaccine is updated twice a year for influenza seasons by the World Health Organization (WHO), which also monitors flu viruses.  The severity of the flu may be significantly decreased, and major consequences like pneumonia can be avoided with only one annual vaccination.  Getting vaccinated helps keep everyone around you safe in addition to protecting you.

The most prevalent influenza viruses in India are subtypes A (H1N1) and A (H3N2).  The flu spreads by small droplets when infected individuals cough, sneeze, or speak, and it is most prevalent during the winter and monsoon seasons.

Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze and wash your hands often to keep safe at work.  To prevent spreading the flu, it’s better to remain at home if you’re feeling ill.  You and others around you may avoid contracting the flu by adopting healthy work practices and obtaining a yearly vaccination.
