Ujjawal Choudhary achieves a national record in the Indian Open Throws Competition

Ujjawal Choudhary of Haryana won the gold in the U20 discus throw event and set a new national record on Thursday, the first day of the 4th Indian Open Throws Competition, held at the Jio Institute at Ulwe in Navi Mumbai.  The old record of 58.11 meters was surpassed by Choudhary’s best of 59.34 meters.

“I prepared in the pre-season in South Africa and was confident of doing well,” Choudhary remarked after his victory.  Breaking the national record makes me extremely delighted, and I’m now aiming for the Asian Championships later this year.”

Behind Choudhary, Vaibhav of Himachal Pradesh (53.48m) and Ritik of Haryana (52.88m) took home silver and bronze, respectively.

With a throw of 72.48 meters, Karnataka’s Shashank Patil topped the charts in the qualifying round of the prestigious men’s javelin throw competition.  Sunny Sheoran (71.43m) and Nitesh Yadav (72.34m) of the Army came in second and third, respectively.

Usmanali Khan of the Reliance Foundation won gold in the U-18 discus throw with a best throw of 55.11 meters.  After receiving his gold, Usmanali said, “Since joining the Reliance Foundation, I’ve seen a significant increase in my performance.  Here, the infrastructure and training facilities are really top-notch.  It is among the greatest training locations in India, and I have been honing my skills there.”

Sonu from Delhi and Yashraj Jain from Madhya Pradesh, who threw the discus 52.15 and 51.44 meters, respectively, won silver and bronze in the category.

With a remarkable effort of 56.39 meters, Seema of Haryana won gold in the women’s discus throw event in the day’s first senior competition.  Neetika Verma and Priya took silver (50.23 meters) and bronze (48.88 meters), respectively.

Nikita Kumari of Rajasthan won the U20 women’s discus throw competition with a distance of 46.78 meters.  Aryan Satpute of Maharashtra won gold in the men’s U18 shot put with a distance of 18.06 meters, followed by Akhand Partap Singh of Uttar Pradesh (18.06 meters) and Harpartap Singh of Punjab (18.04 meters).
