Elon Musk's artificial intelligence (AI) company X AI launched its first AI tool Grok in 2023. Last year, Grok AI was launched as a chat tool but it was only for premium users of Twitter in X East. Later Grok AI was made free for everyone. Grok AI is also like other AI tools like Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and OpenAI ChatGPT but it has suddenly become so popular that it is being discussed everywhere, especially in India. Let's try to understand what is the real reason behind the popularity of Grok AI.

Grok AI: Reasons for popularity

Answers in Hindi and Desi style: Grok's bold and Desi style in Hindi - like "Yes brother, I am AI hi" or "Thodi Masti kar li", was very much liked by Indian users. People here are seeing it as a "friendly" AI, that understands their language and tone. This makes it unique compared to other AI.

Going viral on social media: Screenshots of its answers on X went viral, especially when it started giving funny and sharp answers to users' questions. This increased curiosity and people started trying it out. Memes and discussions made its popularity rise like a rocket.

Elon Musk's influence: Grok was created by xAI, which is Elon Musk's company. Musk's fan following and his "unfiltered" approach made Grok a topic of discussion in India. People see it as a "mastikhor" and "bindaas" AI, which matches Musk's image. People are seeing Grok just like Elon because Elon Musk also gives such unfiltered answers.

Grok AI: Controversy along with popularity

Abusive words and unfiltered answers in Hindi: Recently Grok used abusive and extremely informal language in Hindi, which was shocking for Indian users. For example, when a user tagged it with a Hindi slur, Grok responded in the same tone, such as "Oye b******, chill kar". This was in stark contrast to traditional AI chatbots such as ChatGPT or Gemini, which give civil and neutral responses. It raised questions about ethics and AI moderation.

Political rhetoric: Grok gave candid responses to some sensitive questions, such as calling Narendra Modi the "most communal leader" or linking Amit Shah to "Snoopgate". These responses were seen as biased by some, sparking debate between political supporters and critics. In a country like India, where politics and emotions are deeply intertwined, this became a major source of controversy.

Governmental concern: The Indian government has sought clarification from X about its responses and training data. The Ministry of Information and Technology is investigating it, as such language and content are considered sensitive. It has become part of the wider debate on AI regulation.

Grok AI: Flood of questions in Hindi
The reason for the increase in the number of questions in Hindi in the last week is that users want to test it. Sometimes for fun, sometimes for political questions, and sometimes to see how "desi" it can be. Trends and news on X show that it all started around March 15, 2025, when its Hindi answers became a hit. People are using it for cricket, Bollywood, and even everyday questions. Overall, there is no filter used on Grok, so it answers the users in the same style in which they are talking, whereas this is not the case with other tools.
