Rajasthan Royals' Jofra Archer bowls a delivery during the Indian Premier League cricket match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals in Hyderabad, India, Sunday, March 23, 2025.
England pacer Jofra Archer endured a night to forget during Rajasthan Royals' (RR) IPL 2025 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Sunday, March 23.

The speedster set an unwanted record, registering the most expensive bowling figures in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Bowling at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Archer leaked 76 runs in his four-over spell without picking up a wicket, surpassing Gujarat Titans’ (GT) paceman Mohit Sharma’s 0/73 against Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2024. The 29-year-old speedster, RR’s costliest acquisition at ₹12.50 crore in last year’s mega auction, struggled to find rhythm as SRH batters tore into him mercilessly.

A spell to forget

Archer’s nightmare spell saw him concede 20 boundaries (16 fours and 4 sixes), managing just a single dot ball across his four-over quota. Sunrisers’ batters exploited his pace, dispatching him to all parts of the ground in a relentless assault.

Worst bowling figures in IPL history

  • Jofra Archer (RR) – 0/76 in 4 overs vs SRH (Hyderabad, 2025)
  • Mohit Sharma (GT) – 0/73 in 4 overs vs DC (Delhi, 2024)
  • Basil Thampi (SRH) – 0/70 in 4 overs vs RCB (Bengaluru, 2018)
  • Yash Dayal (GT) – 0/69 in 4 overs vs KKR (Ahmedabad, 2023)
  • Reece Topley (RCB) – 1/68 in 4 overs vs SRH (Bengaluru, 2024)

Toss gamble gone wrong

Even though Riyan Parag, who debuted as skipper for RR, won the toss, his decision to bowl first to a batting-heavy SRH, that too in conditions so dry, was a gamble that has cost him. As the 23-year-old embarks to make record chase, the fight will be a tough one to nail.

Meanwhile, RR had high hopes for Archer, expecting him to lead their pace attack. However, the England quick’s struggle underlined concerns over his form and fitness. His performance also raised questions about whether Rajasthan Royals' Rs 12.50 crore gamble on him at the auction was justified.
