New Delhi: Indian IT firms had secured one-fifth of the total H-1B visas issued by the United States according to data published by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The data revealed that the I-T giants like Infosys Tata Consultancy Services HCL Wipro and Tech Mahindra were among the top beneficiaries. Jeff Bezos Amazon remained the highest receiver of H-1B visa approvals in 2024. What is H-1B visa? The H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows US companies to employ foreign workers in specialized fields such as IT finance engineering medicine and more. In India the demand for the H-1B visa is too high among the professionals who are seeking employment in the United States.The 2025 H-1B visa lottery registration process has undergone changes making it more employer-centric. Tech layoffs have impacted many H-1B holders prompting discussions on visa grace periods and extensions. According to the data shared by USCIS between April and September last year a whopping 24766 of the 130000 H-1B visas were granted to Indian-origin companies alone. Narayana Murthys Infosys bagged a total of 8140 H-1B visas in 2024. It is important to note that this was the highest an Indian I-T company received in a year. Infosys came second to Amazon in 2024. Infosys was followed by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) - 5274 visas HCL America - 2953 Wipro - 1634 visas and Tech Mahindra - 1199 visas. Since 2010 Indian workers have consistently got the majority of H-1B visas. In 2023 73% of approved H-1B visa applicants were from India followed by China at 12%. According to the report no other country received more than 2% of the total H-1B visa approvals.
