I feel unsatisfied with my boyfriend earning just over $1,000 a month

My 30-year-old boyfriend is a civil engineer earning VND28 million (US$1,093) a month, and I can’t help feeling unsatisfied and worried about our future together.

At 26, I manage human resources for a private company, drawing a salary of VND17 million. Despite nearly four years together, my increasing unease about our financial future troubles me. My boyfriend owns neither a house nor a car and has savings of merely VND700 million.

I envision a marriage built on solid financial ground. I’ve discussed with him the need to boost his earnings to VND35-40 million a month. However, he feels his salary is competitive given his experience in his field.

He’s dedicated to construction, currently pursuing a design certification to hopefully secure more private projects. He also assists his family’s small carpentry business back in his hometown. While I appreciate his family commitment, my concerns grow.

I’ve suggested he concentrate on his primary career and seek advancement opportunities instead of juggling too many responsibilities. He remains convinced he’s on the right path, but admits he can’t immediately meet my higher income expectations.

Now, I find myself pondering whether to wait for his potential growth or seek a new romance for myself. What should I do?
