New Delhi: Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who is one of the legendary Indian cricket players, has appreciated the commentary initiative in regional languages in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He especially praised Bhojpuri commentary and described it as extremely energetic. Dhoni says that this commentary reminds him of the old -fashioned radio commentary, which enjoys hearing. Significantly, Bhojpuri language made its place in IPL 2023 as a commentary for the first time.
This year, the 18th season 16 of the IPL is being streamted live at different feeds, in which commentary is available in 12 languages. These languages include English, Hindi, Marathi, Haryanvi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarati and Punjabi.
Dhoni also shared that he has not heard much commentary in regional languages, as the replements are limited during watching live matches and most of the comments they hear in English or Hindi. He believes that by listening to commentary in these languages, the game can be analyzed better. Dhoni also likes to listen to the words of experienced commentators, as he is former players and cover many matches in various tournaments and countries. Their deep understanding and experience helps in better understanding the game.
Dhoni believes that as a player, he knows the strength and weaknesses of his team, but listening to the commentary from the external perspective gives new ideas. This inspires the strategy to add a new approach to the strategy, which can then be tested based on data and analysis.
