Shreyas Iyer will be banking on his proven leadership skills to revive the fortunes of perennial underachievers Punjab Kings who begin their IPL 2025 campaign against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. Iyer who steered Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title last season and previously took Delhi Capitals to the 2020 final now faces the task of ending Punjab’s 18-year-long quest for their maiden IPL crown. Punjab who last reached the final in 2014 and made the semifinals in 2018 have failed to break into the top five in the past four editions—even after rebranding from Kings XI Punjab to Punjab Kings. Despite several changes in squad and leadership consistency has eluded them. With Iyer at the helm and reuniting with coach Ricky Ponting the Kings will hope for a fresh start under a captain who knows how to go the distance.
