New Delhi: In the fourth match of IPL 2025 the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) faced a surprising defeat against the Delhi Capitals (DC) due to an extraordinary comeback. LSG initially appeared to be in a strong position scoring 161-3 by the 14th over while batting first. However they lost momentum and ended their innings with a total of 211-9 after 20 overs. LSG had the upper hand when DC lost six wickets for 113 runs by the 13th over. However a stellar performance from Ashutosh Sharma who scored 66 runs off 31 balls along with Vipraj Nigams quick 39 runs off 15 balls helped DC secure victory by one wicket.
Rishabh Pant made his debut as captain for Delhi Capitals but his performance was disappointing. He was out for a duck on his first six balls in the opening innings and failed to execute an important stumping in the final over which could have secured the victory for Lucknow Super Giants. With Mohit Sharma at the crease and Delhi Capitals down to their last wicket Pant missed the stumping opportunity on the first delivery of the 20th over. Sharma managed to rotate the strike on the next ball and Ahustosh Sharma hit a six on the third ball clinching the win for Delhi Capitals.
Following the loss images of LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka conversing with Rishabh Pant circulated widely. Fans quickly connected this interaction to Goenkas animated conversation with KL Rahul from the previous year. For those unfamiliar Goenka had a tense discussion with then-captain KL Rahul after LSGs defeat to SRH and many believe that Goenkas demeanor towards Rahul contributed to KLs decision to leave the franchise.
Rishabh Pant acknowledged Ashutosh Sharma and Vipraj Nigam for their contributions to DCs resurgence while reflecting on the loss.
The top-order batsmen performed admirably achieving a commendable score on this pitch. The team aims to focus on the positives from each game and learn from every experience. By consistently executing the fundamentals correctly the team believes it will benefit them in the future. Although they secured early wickets they recognized that the pitch was conducive to batting necessitating a commitment to maintaining the basics throughout the match.
Pant commented during the post-match presentation that there were a few effective partnerships in the game specifically mentioning Stubbs Ashutosh and another player Vipraj Nigam. He acknowledged that Nigam performed well and significantly impacted the match in favor of the opposing team.
The bowlers had sufficient support yet there were fundamental aspects we could have executed better. We experienced some pressure as we are still acclimating but there are many positives to glean from this match. Luck is certainly a factor in this sport; for instance if the ball had missed Mohit Sharmas pads it could have led to a stumping opportunity. However such occurrences are part of cricket. Its important not to dwell on these moments but to concentrate on improving our performance.
