There are very few movies in Bollywood that turn out to be huge hits and earn a 2000 per cent profit. However the movie we are talking about is one of them. It was released on the big screens alongside the famous film Sholay. The movie in discussion is Jai Santoshi Maa. The film became such a hit that in the 1970s when earning a few lakhs was considered a big deal it managed to earn in crores. Yes you read that right! Helmed by Vijay Sharma the movie featured Kanan Kaushal Ashish Kumar Rajnibala Bharat Bhushan and Bela Bose in key roles. The reason for the movie’s massive success was its plot which narrated the story through the lives of ordinary citizens. Surprisingly the film had no antagonist and no violent scenes. In several regions Jai Santoshi Maa outperformed Sholay which was released later that year and had a budget 12 times higher than this film. The movie was made for Rs 25 lakh and turned out to be a massive hit managing to earn Rs 5 crore. When adjusted for inflation this amount would be nearly Rs 1000 crore. With a 2000% profit Jai Santoshi Maa remains the most profitable Indian film. The movie was released alongside Sholay. While Sholay grossed Rs 15 crore in its original run its profit was 400 per cent lower compared to the Kanan Kaushal Ashish Kumar-starrer.  Do you know that the film ran in big screens for as good as 350 days. Surprisingly on the first day of the film it earned Rs 56 only.
