Bronze medallists Simranjit Kaur of the World Championships and Jaismine Lamboria of the Commonwealth Games both advanced to the semifinals of the 8th Elite Women’s National Boxing Championship 2025 on Tuesday with impressive performances.
Simranjit, the first Punjabi woman boxer to participate in the Olympics, demonstrated her skills by defeating Railways’ Prachi by unanimous decision in the 60-65kg division. In the meanwhile, Jaismine (SSCB) defeated Hannah Joy of Tamil Nadu in two rounds to maintain her winning ways.
The tournament is held from March 20–27, 2025, at the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, and is organized by the Boxing Federation of India in partnership with the Uttar Pradesh Boxing Association. This week-long event, which is governed by the World Boxing Technical & Competition Rules and consists of three three-minute rounds with one-minute rest periods, has 188 fighters from 24 state units participating across 10 weight divisions.
In the greatest surprise of the day, Kalaivani S, the 2019 National Champion from Tamil Nadu, stunned Devika Ghorpade, the 2022 Youth World Champion from Maharashtra, by winning the Light Flyweight (48–51 kg) class by unanimous decision. In the meanwhile, reigning Lightfly champion Anamika Hooda advanced to the quarterfinals with a decisive 5:0 unanimous win against Mehak Dharra of Delhi, bringing her one step closer to retaining her championship.
Now, in what could be an exciting semifinal matchup, Anamika will take against Kalaivani S. Both Haryana’s Tamanna and Rajasthan’s Sunita, who earned their positions via arduous quarterfinal victories, will face off on the other side of the bracket.
Two-time reigning national champion Nupur (Railways) defeated Jayasree S of Tamil Nadu to progress in the heavyweight class. This paved the way for a semifinal matchup with Ipsita Vikram of Uttar Pradesh, who easily defeated Chandan Choudhary of Rajasthan by unanimous decision.
Sonu (AIP), the silver medalist from the last competition, advanced to the round of four as well after defeating Sarita Rai of UP 5:0 in a unanimous decision. She will now compete against Simranjit Kaur in a much-anticipated semifinal. In the 54–57 kg class, Jaismine will compete against Vishakha Varitya of Punjab, while Priya of Haryana will compete against Poonam of Railways. Nupur’s semifinal matchup with Ipsita in the heavyweight class is expected to be another exciting matchup.
