UPI Down: India's most popular digital payment service Unified Payments Interface (UPI) saw a big technical issue on Wednesday evening. Due to this malfunction, thousands of users across the country are facing problems in payment and fund transfer. Googlepay, PhonePe and other major UPI apps have also been affected by this outage. Users have expressed their displeasure and problems on social media, especially X (X) platform.
According to the report of Downdetector, the problem started around 7 pm and continued till 9 pm. During this time around 23,000 complaints were filed. Which reflects the prevalence of this outage. According to the data, 82% of users had difficulty in paying. 13% suffered problems in fund transfer. While 4% of users were unable to use the app. Many users wrote on social media that they are not able to pay shops. Which affected their everyday needs. This malfunction also harassed those who depend on cashless transactions.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) which operates the UPI system. NPCI has not yet disclosed the exact cause of this outage. Experts believe that this server overload, software disturbances or problems arising during maintenance. On social media, some users called it 'UPI's first major downtime'. While others demanded immediate action from the government and NPCI. Meanwhile, the affected apps and banks have appealed to users to be patient.
UPI has developed by NPCI. The backbone of digital payment has been formed in India. This service provides quick and safe transactions to millions of people through mobile phones. From online shopping to bill payment and money transfer, UPI has made the lives of Indians easier. In January 2025, 16.99 billion transactions were recorded through UPI. Which reflects its popularity. In such a situation, such outage not only causes trouble for the users but also questions the strength of digital infrastructure.
