There are movies that make money and change lives of actors directors and producers while others result in massive losses sometimes even leading to closure of the production house. Similarly a major production house in South India known for its action-packed films faced a downfall after a series of unsuccessful projects. This production house has also delivered superhit films with Rajinikanth. Here’s the story of one such production house. We are talking about Lyca Productions founded in 2014 by Subaskaran Allirajah. The company has produced films in Hindi Tamil and Malayalam. Some of its most expensive movies include Ponniyin Selvan directed by Mani Ratnam starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. This period drama was released in two parts. Lyca Productions has completed 10 years in the industry and has produced several big-budget and blockbuster films mainly in Tamil cinema. However it has also faced challenges due to the rise of OTT platforms. The studio’s journey began with Kaithi (2014) directed by AR Murugadoss and starring Vijay. The film was a hit and Lyca continued to make critically acclaimed movies. In 2018 the production house delivered some well-received films like Vada Chennai and Ippadai Vellum which were critically acclaimed. The turning point came in 2018 with the release of Rajinikanths 2.0 directed by Shankar. It became the highest-grossing Tamil film ever earning Rs 700 crore worldwide a record it still holds. Following this success Lyca produced films like Darbar and Aishwarya Rai-Vikrams Ponniyin Selvan and even entered Bollywood with Akshay Kumars Ram Setu. In just 10 years Lyca produced 43 films and handled the distribution of many more. It holds records for the highest-grossing Tamil film the biggest Tamil franchise and three of the most expensive Tamil films ever made. How Lyca’s downfall began After 2023 Lycas luck started to change. Several of its films flopped leading to massive financial losses. Within a year it suffered five major failures. From late 2023 to 2024 the production house released big-budget films but failed to find success. These were Kangana Ranaut-Raghava Lawrences Chandramukhi 2 Lal Salaam Indian 2 Vettaiyan and Vidaamuyarchi. The movies flopped back-to-back despite featuring superstars like Rajinikanth Kamal Haasan and Ajith Kumar.
