New Delhi: Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 veteran R Ashwin expressed concern about the challenges faced by bowlers in the current T20 format. He highlighted the significant batting advantage noting the scarcity of scores below 200 runs in the first week of the tournament. Ashwin suggested the intense pressure on bowlers to consistently restrict runs may necessitate mental health support.
Ashwin commented on his YouTube channel about the increasing difficulty for bowlers to succeed on some IPL pitches jokingly suggesting that bowling full tosses might be a more viable tactic than conventional bowling strategies.
The first week of matches featured predominantly high-scoring encounters. Only two games saw totals below 200 runs. Even in those lower-scoring matches one team successfully chased a relatively modest target with ease. Several other matches saw teams amass substantial totals exceeding 200 runs with some teams successfully chasing down large scores and others narrowly winning despite scoring exceptionally high runs.
The introduction of the Impact Player rule in the 2024 IPL season allowing teams to substitute a batter or bowler correlated with a substantial rise in average match scores reaching 189 runs.
Responding to analyst Prasanna Agorams comment about bowlers adopting a more cautious approach Ashwin provided his viewpoint.
You said bowlers are becoming defensive. I want to talk about that. I think bowlers will soon have to be accompanied by personal psychologists. I genuinely mean that. Okay people say bowlers are becoming defensive. Let that argument stand. But in several instances bowling has literally become impossible. On certain grounds you cant keep the stumps in play. You mentioned full tosses-but (Yuzvendra) Chahal bowled full tosses to Sai Sudharsan and got away with singles (on Tuesday in Ahmedabad) Ashwin said on his Youtube channel.
In fact a full toss isnt always a bad ball. On some pitches deliveries that land on the wicket actually make it easier for batters. We all thought full tosses were easier to hit when we were young but on certain surfaces the ball pitches and comes onto the bat better than a full toss Ashwin further added.
Ashwin welcomed the new rule allowing reviews of wide deliveries using a moving marker saying it helps bowlers.
Veteran off-spinner R Ashwin rejoined the Chennai Super Kings for ₹9.75 crore. This marks his return to the franchise after a hiatus since 2015 following his recent international retirement during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
