The entire series of the new BBC crime drama 'This City Is Ours' is now available on BBC iPlayer, following its airing on BBC One. The gripping gang drama unfolds in Liverpool, where Ronnie Phelan, played by Sean Bean, heads his criminal family and empire.
However, the empire teeters on the edge of a full-blown war as contenders vie to succeed him. Viewers will recall that following Ronnie Phelan's death, his impulsive son Jamie Phelan (Jack McMullen) and his right-hand man Michael Kavanagh (James Nelson-Joyce) locked horns over control of the business.
Jamie was hell-bent on taking the reins while Michael harboured dreams of a better life and raising a child with his girlfriend, Diana.
Their rivalry escalates into violence as the series hurtles towards a dramatic climax - but who will seize control of the criminal empire and what might be in store for a potential second series?
In a pivotal meeting, Michael announces his intention to leave the business. A proposed peace deal suggests installing Elaine's nephew-in-law Bobby Duffy (Kevin Harvey) and Michael's trusted lieutenant Banksey (Mike Noble) as the new joint leaders of the gang.
However, this decision incenses Jamie and his cousin Rachel (Laura Aikman), who are essentially ousted from their positions of power and are determined to take control.
Jamie concocts a plan to eliminate Michael by abducting his girlfriend, Diana (portrayed by Hannah Onslow), who is pregnant. Jamie's kin and cronies are appalled, while Michael seethes at the peril faced by Diana.
In retaliation, Michael decides to give Jamie a taste of his own medicine by snatching his son Alfie.
Cheryl, under the guise of offering assistance, visits Elaine's residence, only to abscond with baby Alfie and deliver him to Michael. In a chilling move, Michael threatens Jamie with the prospect of leaping from a height while clutching the infant.
A tense exchange ensues as Diana and Alfie become pawns in a hostage swap, leading to a fiery confrontation between Michael and Jamie. The situation escalates when Jamie, emotionally charged by the mention of Ronnie, brandishes a firearm.
Diana, seeking an end to their nightmare, persuades Michael to come clean about Ronnie's death, prompting his confession that he murdered Ronnie "because it was necessary".
The revelation shocks Elaine and brings Jamie back to his senses.
Michael yearns to abandon his criminal ways and forge a new path with Diana, whose suspicions about his illicit activities were overshadowed by the hope that fatherhood might reform him.
Yet the question lingers: Will Elaine and Jamie permit Michael to lead a peaceful life, given his role in Ronnie's demise?
At the time of writing, the BBC has not confirmed a second series of This City Is Ours.
The series also unveiled that Ronnie Phelan had been a police informant for several years, potentially explaining his uncanny ability to evade jail time. However, DS Barney Styles is eager to recruit Davey's wife Cheryl Crawford (Saoirse-Monica Jackson) as a fresh police informant.
In the dramatic finale, Colombian cocaine supplier Ricardo (Daniel Cerqueira) met his end at the hands of Michael's trusted ally, Banksey (Mike Noble). The fatal act was in retaliation to Ricardo planting a bomb in Banksey's car, which nearly exploded with him and his teenage son inside.
With Ricardo now out of the picture, what repercussions will this have on the criminal underworld?
This City Is Ours is available to watch on BBC iPlayer, with episodes airing every Sunday at 9pm.
