India’s billionaire club grew slightly over the past year reaching a total of 284 billionaires with a combined wealth of around Rs. 98 lakh crore. Despite housing 90 of the world’s wealthiest individuals Mumbai lost its status as Asia’s billionaire capital. According to the Hurun Global Rich List 2025 175 Indian billionaires saw their fortunes increase while 109 either experienced no growth or a decline. Mukesh Ambani reclaimed the title of Asias richest person while Gautam Adani saw the biggest surge in wealth adding nearly Rs. 1 lakh crore to his fortune. Meanwhile Roshni Nadar made history by becoming the first Indian woman to break into the Global Top 10 Women rankings. This came after her father Shiv Nadar transferred a 47% stake in HCL to her. She is now the fifth richest woman in the world. Overall Indian billionaires saw their collective wealth grow by 10% over the past year with the average net worth now at approximately Rs. 34514 crore. The country is also home to seven billionaires under 40 mainly from Bengaluru and Mumbai. The youngest among them are Razorpay co-founders Shashank Kumar and Harshil Mathur both aged 34 with a net worth of approximately Rs. 8643 crore each. India ranks 3rd on Hurun Global Rich List 2025 India ranked third on the Hurun Global Rich List 2025 with 284 billionaires. The United States claimed the top spot for the first time in a decade boasting 870 billionaires followed by China with 823 of the world’s wealthiest individuals. For the first time Shanghai surpassed Mumbai as Asia’s billionaire capital with 92 billionaires compared to 90 in Mumbai. Mukesh Ambani chairman of Reliance Industries reclaimed the title of Asias richest person with a net worth of approximately Rs. 8.6 lakh crore. He topped the list of Indias wealthiest followed by Gautam Adani who saw his fortune increase by 13% making him India’s biggest wealth gainer. Roshni Nadar and her family secured the third position while Dilip Shanghvi and family who own Sun Pharmaceutical Industries ranked fourth with a fortune of around Rs. 2.5 lakh crore. Azim Premji former chairman of Wipro and his family rounded out the top five with a net worth of Rs. 2.2 lakh crore. More GDP than Saudi Arabia India’s billionaires now collectively own more wealth than the entire economy of Saudi Arabia according to the Hurun Global Rich List 2025. The combined net worth of Indian billionaires has reached approximately Rs. 98 lakh crore which is nearly one-third of India’s GDP. In comparison Saudi Arabias GDP stands at around ₹91.35 lakh crore (equivalent to $1.07 trillion) based on the World Bank’s estimate and an exchange rate of ₹85.59 per USD. This means that the cumulative fortune of Indian billionaires now surpasses the total output of one of the world’s largest oil economies. Global Hurun Global Rich List 2025 On the global stage Elon Musk CEO of Tesla and SpaceX retained his position as the worlds richest person for the fourth time in five years. He also became the first individual to surpass a net worth of USD 400 billion. Musk’s wealth surged by a staggering USD 189 billion over the past year largely due to the ‘Trump effect’ on Teslas stock. However his fortune has since dropped by nearly USD 100 billion since the Hurun list cut-off on January 15 impacted by his involvement with Dogecoin political activism and increasing competition from Chinese EV companies which have affected Tesla’s share price. Amazon’s Jeff Bezos followed in second place with a fortune of USD 266 billion while Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg climbed into the top three for the first time. His rise was driven by growing investor confidence in Meta’s AI and tech developments. This year’s Hurun list also featured four singers six athletes and one influencer. The singers: Jay-Z Rihanna Taylor Swift and Paul McCartney. The athletes: Michael Jordan Tiger Woods Floyd Mayweather LeBron James Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. The influencer: Kim Kardashian.
