You can now add music to WhatsApp status: Here's how
28 Mar 2025
WhatsApp has introduced a new capability to let users add temporary music clips to their profile updates.
Snippets from popular songs can now be featured in WhatsApp statuses, the parent company Meta said.
The feature is being rolled out globally and will continue to expand over the coming weeks.
The status feature on WhatsApp (in the updates tab) lets you share text, photo, and video messages that disappear after 24 hours.
How to use the feature?
Usage
To use this new music feature, users just have to tap on the option to add a status. A music note icon will appear at the top of the screen, letting them add music.
The duration for adding music is up to 15 seconds for a photo and 60 seconds for a video.
This feature comes after Meta introduced similar capabilities on Instagram and is reminiscent of features popularized by earlier platforms like AIM and MySpace.
WhatsApp's extensive music library for status updates
Music selection
WhatsApp provides a huge music library with "millions of songs to choose from," letting you pick specific portions of a track for your status.
This comes especially handy for highlighting specific lyrics/soundbites and jumping on viral trends.
Even though you can share music on statuses, WhatsApp promises it can't see what you share and won't know which songs you add to your status updates due to end-to-end encryption.
