In only 363 days of the fiscal year, the Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh drank alcohol valued at an astounding Rs 866 crore. Sales peaked around holidays including Diwali, Holi, and New Year’s, which took place between April 1, 2024, and March 28, 2025.
Liquor sales have brought in more than Rs 40 crore more than they did the year before. In an attempt to clear off existing stock, booze valued at over Rs 10 crore was sold in a record-breaking sale during the last week of the fiscal year.
The excise agency will take the Pos (Point of Sale) machine from stores after 10 pm on March 31, 2025, thus licensees are rushing to use up their current supply in the last three days of the fiscal year. On April 1, the department will provide these computers to new licensees.
For the fiscal year 2025–2026, new licenses have been given to up to 471 liquor stores, which include 265 desi, 181 composites, 12 model shops, and 15 bhang shops overall.
Compared to the previous year, earnings increased by 40 crores.
Up till February 2024, alcohol sales totaled 755 crore in the preceding fiscal year. Up to February of the fiscal year 2024–25, alcohol sales totaled 798 crore, representing a 43 crore increase in income. In March, the last month of the fiscal year, 68 crore was sold.
To get rid of inventory, liquor licensees give out freebies and discounts.
Liquor licensees are doing all they can to get rid of their current inventory with just three days remaining in the fiscal year. When consumers make purchases, some licensees give them bottles, glasses, and T-shirts. On certain booze brands, others are running a “buy one, get one free” promotion.
