Earthquake Death Toll Crosses 1,000 In Myanmar And Thailand, Over 2,000 Injured; India Dispatches 15-Tonne Of Humanitarian Aid

Naypyidaw: The death toll rose to 1,000 in Myanmar after six earthquakes struck the Asian nation on Friday. According to reports, over 2,000 people were also injured. Notably, the biggest earthquake that hit Myanmar was of 7.7 magnitude. The epicenter of this quake was reportedly near Sagaing in central Myanmar. Aftershocks followed the massive earthquake. One of them was reportedly of magnitude 6.4.

Myanmar junta chief Min Aung Hlaing warned the number of casualties was likely to rise. He had also declared an 'emergency'. Mandalay was the worst affected city in Myanmar.

Notably, a maximum number of casualties were reportedly from a hospital in the capital Naypyidaw, a mosque in Mandalay that collapsed as earthquakes struck when people were praying inside and the University of Mandalay as its building caught fire.

Tremors in Thailand

Tremors were also felt in Thailand. Metro and rail services were suspended in Thailand due to tremors. Around 10 people were reportedly dead, while 16 others were injured and 101 others were missing at three construction sites in Thailand's capital Bangkok, including the collapse of a 30-storey government building, according to Bangkok Deputy Governor Tavida Kamolvej, Bangkok Post reported.

Pasakorn Boonyalak, director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, said the earthquake caused damage in Bangkok and 10 other provinces, including Chiang Rai, Phrae, Mae Hong Son, Lampang, Chai Nat, Lamphun, Loei, Samut Sakhon, Chiang Mai, and Kamphaeng Phet.

Thailand's Meteorological Department said on Saturday that two additional earthquakes were detected in Mae Hong Son. The earthquake of magnitude 4.1 on the Richter Scale occurred at a depth of five kilometers, in Pai district at 11:21 pm (local time), followed by a magnitude 2.0 quake at 3:24 am (local time), also in Pai.

Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has called for calm from the public as officials warn of possible aftershocks following an earthquake in Myanmar that shook many parts of the country, including Bangkok, on Friday, Bangkok Post reported.

India Sends Relief To Myanmar:

India on Saturday dispatched 15 tonnes of the first tranche of urgent humanitarian aid for the people of Myanmar following yesterday's earthquakes. The relief package includes essential supplies such as tents, sleeping bags, blankets, ready-to-eat meals and generator sets.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated that India will continue to monitor the developments and more aid will follow.

Indian Air Force C-130 J aircraft carrying approximately 15 tonnes of relief material, including blankets, tarpaulin, hygiene kits, sleeping bags, essential medicines (paracetamol, antibiotics, syringes, cotton bandages and other items), generator sets, hygiene kits, solar lamps, food packets and kitchen set departed from Hindon Air Force Station.

In a post on X, Jaishankar stated, "India dispatches first tranche of urgent humanitarian aid for the people of Myanmar. @IAF_MCC C-130 is carrying blankets, tarpaulin, hygiene kits, sleeping bags, solar lamps, food packets and kitchen set. A search & rescue team and medical team is also accompanying this flight. We will continue to monitor the developments and more aid will follow."

Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Myanmar stated that it is coordinating the speedy delivery of assistance and relief supplies from India with the Myanmar authorities.
