New Delhi: Indian cricketer Axar Patel currently the T20I vice-captain is expected to receive a promotion in the upcoming BCCI central contract renewals. A meeting between BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir on March 29th will determine the final decision. This years contract announcement is later than usual typically preceding the IPL season.
Axar Rohit & Kohli to get boost
The Times of India reports that Axar Patel is likely to receive a contract upgrade from Grade C to Grade B within the BCCIs central contracts. Rohit Sharma Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja are expected to remain in the top Grade A+ category despite recent T20I retirements.
A source informed the Times of India that Jasprit Bumrah along with three others will remain in the top player category.
The BCCIs central contract system typically places players competing in all three cricket formats in the highest grade. However Rohit Sharma Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja despite their recent T20I retirement are anticipated to remain in the top grade due to their contributions to the ICC Champions Trophy victory.
The BCCI central contracts for the 2023/24 season categorize Indian cricketers into four grades based on their performances and contributions. The elite Grade A+ category includes Rohit Sharma Virat Kohli Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja who are among the most consistent performers for India across all formats. These players receive the highest retainers and are considered the backbone of the national team.
In Grade A six players—Ravichandran Ashwin Mohammed Shami Mohammed Siraj KL Rahul Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya—have secured contracts. This group consists of experienced stars like Ashwin and Shami alongside rising talents like Gill and Siraj who have been instrumental in Indias recent successes. Grade B features five cricketers including Surya Kumar Yadav Rishabh Pant and Kuldeep Yadav reflecting their importance in the squad particularly in white-ball formats.
The Grade C category includes 15 players featuring emerging talents such as Rinku Singh Tilak Varma and Ruturaj Gaikwad. These players have impressed in domestic and IPL performances earning a place in the contract list. Alongside them are established names like Sanju Samson Shardul Thakur and Axar Patel who continue to contribute to the team in various capacities.
