Nine foreign travelers will be deported and banned from returning to Singapore after they were found approaching fellow nationals at Changi Airport to transport gold and mobile phones back to their home countries.
The police said the items were meant to be handed over to individuals in the travelers’ home countries in exchange for cash rewards, The Straits Times reported.
Authorities did not disclose the nationalities or genders of the people, nor the exact timing of their deportation, according to Channel News Asia.
Under the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore Act, touting at the airport is prohibited. Offenders can be issued a Prohibition Order, which bars them from entering the airport unless they are departing on a flight. Violating this order may lead to arrest for criminal trespass.
Singaporean authorities reminded travelers not to carry goods on behalf of strangers, warning that doing so could expose them to serious security risks or potential arrest and prosecution for involvement in illegal activities.
Renowned for its strict laws and low crime rates, Singapore was recently ranked the safest country in Southeast Asia, according to a report by Numbeo, the world’s largest user-contributed database on cities and countries.
