If you suffer from thyroid, you would be advised to take medication every day of your life.

But you might find it unnecessary to continue with the pills if you feel your symptoms are under control. However, before you pull the plug by yourself, you might want to learn about a few ifs and buts. We spoke to a health expert to find out what happens to the body when you abruptly stop taking your thyroid medication.

When an individual discontinues their thyroid medication, the body undergoes several physiological changes that can significantly impact overall health. "The gland, which regulates metabolism, energy levels, and various bodily functions, may struggle to maintain adequate hormone production without the supplemental medication. As a result, symptoms of hypothyroidism, such as fatigue, weight gain, depression, and sensitivity to cold, may re-emerge or worsen," said Dr Mahesh D M, Consultant - Endocrinology, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore.

He added that the body's metabolic processes can slow down, leading to a decrease in energy levels and potential weight gain. Therefore, it is crucial for patients to consult with healthcare professionals before making any changes to their medication regimen.

What are the side effects?

The discontinuation of thyroid medication may pose both immediate and prolonged health risks. Those who rely on these medications to regulate thyroid hormone levels could experience a range of adverse effects, including hair fall, fluctuations in energy levels, mood disturbances, menstrual disturbances, and metabolic imbalances. In the short term, Dr Mahesh listed symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, and cognitive difficulties may arise as the body adjusts to the absence of medication.

Dr Anusha Nadig, Consultant - Endocrinology, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru, shared that stopping medication can lead to long-term risks, including an increased risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, infertility, cognitive decline, and depression. "Untreated hypothyroidism can also increase the risk of miscarriage, premature birth, and birth defects during pregnancy," she added.

How often should you take thyroid medicines?

Typically, Dr Mahesh suggests taking these medications once daily, preferably in the morning on an empty stomach to maintain consistent hormone levels. However, the specific dosage and frequency can vary based on individual health needs, the type of thyroiddisorder being treated, and the patient's response to the medication.

When is it okay to quit thyroid medication?

Usually thyroid medication needs to be continued long term, however in some patients to discontinue thyroid medication is a subtle decision that should be made in consultation with doctors. According to Dr Mahesh, factors influencing this decision "may include the stabilization of thyroid hormone levels, the resolution of symptoms associated with thyroid dysfunction, or the successful management of underlying conditions that necessitated the medication in the first place."

He stressed the need to monitor thyroid function tests regularly and evaluate any potential side effects or changes in health status that may arise during treatment.
