Seshadri too was subjected to the same.
When Meenakshi Seshadri Was Almost Replaced by Madhuri Dixit
Meenakshi Seshadri made her debut with Painter Babu (1983) and her second film Hero (1983) catapulted her to overnight sensation. She has mustered immense critical appreciation for her work and prowess. The grapevine runs too fast in the industry. Amidst the several love stories unrequited lovers and proposals Seshadri was named too. In an interview she also addressed the same.
Ace director Rajkumar Santoshi had once proposed to the actress but she refused to marry him. Owing to this he removed her form the shooting of film Damini. I was cast and started shooting for a movie called Damini and there were issues. I was asked to step out of the movie she said in an interview with Zoom.
After being ousted from the cast she recalled how other actresses who were offered her part refused to oblige because they were in solidarity with Seshadri. Appreciating her colleagues she explained And other very leading actresses were offered the role instead of me and they all supported me and said No. We feel something is very wrong if we accept this proposal. We cannot do it. Either she continues or really sorry we cant oblige. That was the time when my respect for each of them shot up. I know for sure Madhuri was one of them. Not sure of others but there were others too.
However they decided to reconcile and did work on the project together. Santhoshi ji and me decided not to talk about it. I feel it is water under the bridge but the courage to standup was not just to make a professional point. That was there of course but mainly it was because I felt there should be no reason that anybody should be told that they are not required anymore. It had several implications rules in the workforce etc. I think how I dealt with it was I kept quiet. I just said that I will not choose to comment because its below my dignity to try and make this into a fight. Im just standing up for what I believe in. If things are going to work out we will all work together as a team.
