Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya has been fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over rate during his team’s Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Gujarat Titans. The five-time champions suffered a 36-run defeat to GT at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Saturday.
"Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate during Match No. 9 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad," the IPL said in a release on Sunday.
"As this was his team's first offence of the season under Article 2.2 of the IPL's Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Pandya was fined INR 12 lakhs," it further added.
This is not the first time Pandya has faced disciplinary action over slow over-rate violations. The issue persisted from last season, culminating in a suspension that saw him miss Mumbai Indians' opening match of IPL 2025.
Gujarat Titans put up a total of 196 runs on a black-soil pitch in Ahmedabad, while MI struggled in their chase, managing only 160 for six. With this victory, Gujarat secured their first win of the tournament.
Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians have now faced two consecutive defeats and are yet to register their first points in IPL 2025.
This comes after the IPL's governing council implemented a new demerit points system for the 2025 season, particularly regarding slow over-rate offences.
"Effective this season, a new Code of Conduct will be implemented from the TATA IPL 2025 season, introducing a demerit points system and suspension points which will remain valid for 36 months," said the BCCI in an official release.
