IPL 2025: Faf du plessis, Mitchell Starc shine as Delhi Capitals beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 7 wickets

New Delhi: Fifty from Faf du Plessis (50) and fifer from Mitchell Starc who went hard in the game as they set the base for Delhi Capitals (DC) to chase down 164 and beat Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 7 wickets in the tenth game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 at Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium Visakhapatnam here on Sunday.
Faf du Plessis and Jake Fraser McGurk approached the chase of 164 with caution initially seeing off Mohammed Shami’s threat. McGurk broke free launching a slog sweep over long-on for a six off Abhishek Sharma in the second over.
DC sensed an opportunity and the dynamic duo quickly went on the attack exploiting the Sunrisers bowling during the powerplay.
Faf took the lead striking Shami for runs with his flawless stroke play. The experienced South African launched the first ball of the third over for a six followed by two consecutive boundaries amassing 15 runs from the over.
The aggression continued and DC ended the powerplay with 52 runs. Faf kept the pressure on hitting Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins for a six and a four immediately after the powerplay.
Faf (50) ran a quick single to reach his half-century but was dismissed in the next over by Zeeshan Ansari. Despite the wicket McGurk responded with a series of boundaries to finish the over strongly.
After misjudging Ansari’s googly McGurk found his first boundary with an inside edge. He followed it up with another boundary through backward point and then launched a ball over long-off for a six. However Ansari had the last laugh as McGurk chipped a delivery back to the bowler ending his cameo on 38 from 32 balls.
KL Rahul (15) came in hit a boundary but was dismissed after missing a sweep allowing the ball to knock the bails off the stumps giving Ansari his second wicket.
Despite losing wickets quickly Hyderabad struggled to contain Tristan Stubbs and Abhishek Porel. Porel finished the game with a huge six leading DC to a 7-wicket victory.
Earlier after losing the toss Sunrisers were in early trouble reduced to 37/4 before Aniket Verma (74 off 41 balls) and Heinrich Klaasen (32 off 19 balls) put together a crucial 77-run partnership to steady the innings.
Kuldeep Yadav (3/22) delivered important breakthroughs while Mitchell Starc (5/35) wrapped up SRH’s innings in just 18.4 overs.
SRH’s innings began with an early setback as Abhishek Sharma was run out for just one in the first over by Vipraj Nigam. Starc struck twice in the third over dismissing Ishan Kishan (2) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (0) leaving SRH at 25/3 in 2.3 overs.
Starc continued his dominance over SRH removing Ishan Kishan (2) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (0) in the third over leaving the Sunrisers at 25/3 in 2.3 overs.
Travis Head looking to counterattack was bowled by Starc for 22 off 12 balls marking the seventh time Starc had dismissed him. SRH found themselves at 37/4 in 4.1 overs.
Klaasen and Aniket took charge with Klaasen hitting Starc for a six and a four taking SRH past 50 in 4.5 overs. By the end of the power play SRH was 58/4 with Klaasen (11*) and Aniket (6*) at the crease.
The pair accelerated bringing up their 50-run partnership in just 22 balls with Aniket smashing two sixes off Axar Patel. SRH crossed the 100-run mark in 9.1 overs maintaining an aggressive pace. At the halfway mark they were 105/4 with Aniket (40*) and Klaasen (31*) unbeaten.
Their 77-run partnership ended when Mohit Sharma dismissed Klaasen for a well-played 32 off 19 balls with Vipraj Nigam taking a fine running catch. SRH was 114/5 in 10.5 overs. Aniket continued to battle with Kuldeep Yadav removing Abhinav Manohar for four runs leaving SRH at 119/6 in 12 overs.
Aniket reached his first IPL fifty off 34 balls with four fours and three sixes.
Kuldeep picked up his second wicket dismissing SRH skipper Pat Cummins (2) for a duck as he was caught in the air. SRH stood at 123/7 in 14 overs.
Aniket fought back hitting Axar Patel for a four and two sixes in the 15th over easing some pressure on SRH.
Kuldeep picked up his third wicket ending Aniket’s brilliant knock with a catch by Jake Fraser McGurk near the boundary as Aniket made 74 off 41 balls with five fours and six sixes. SRH was 148/8 in 15.5 overs.
Starc completed his five-wicket haul by dismissing Harshal Patel (5) and Wiaan Mulder in quick succession leaving SRH at 163/10 in 18.4 overs.
Starc (5/35) produced the best bowling figures of the innings while Kuldeep took 3/22 in four overs and Mohit finished with 1/25 in three overs.
