Rajasthan Royals' acting captain Riyan Parag has been fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during his team's six-run win over Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. Earlier, Mumbai captain Hardik Pandya was fined Rs 12 lakh for a slow over-rate against Gujarat Titans. Under Parag's captaincy, Rajasthan registered its first win of the season in front of the home crowd at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Sunday.

What did the IPL say in the release?

The IPL said in a release, "As this was his team's first offense of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which deals with minimum over-rate offenses, Parag was fined Rs 12 lakh." Till last season, there was a provision of a ban for slow over rate. However, the BCCI has now removed the suspension rule and will only make do with the fine. Before the start of this season, the IPL Governing Council had a meeting with the captains and decided to remove the ban rule. It was agreed in the meeting that captains will be given demerit points and fined for slow over rate. The ban will be imposed only in serious cases.

Captains will get demerit points.

According to a Cricbuzz report, the captain will be penalized with demerit points but will not face a match ban for slow over rate. A Level 1 offense will see a deduction of 25 to 75 percent of the match fee along with demerit points, which will be calculated for the next three years. A Level 2 offense will carry four demerit points if deemed serious. It further states that, for every 4 demerit points, the match referee can impose a penalty in the form of a 100 percent fine or additional demerit points. These demerit points can lead to a future match ban, but a match ban (will not be imposed immediately) for slow over-rate.

Rajasthan's next match against Punjab

Rajasthan lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad in their opening match. He will now face Punjab Kings in Mullanpur on April 5. Talking about the match held on Sunday, Rajasthan Royals defeated CSK by six runs with the help of Nitish Rana's 81 runs in 36 balls and four wickets by leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga. Rajasthan scored 182 runs for nine wickets in 20 overs. In reply, Chennai Super Kings, which could not achieve a target of above 180 runs even once after 2019, failed once again. The team could only score 176 runs for six wickets in 20 overs. Captain Rituraj Gaikwad scored 63 runs, but no other batsman could survive, due to which the team had to face its second consecutive defeat.

Dhoni also could not get the team victory.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who was the best finisher in the world at one time, could not get the team victory. After coming at number nine in the last match, he came to the crease at number seven in this match. Then Chennai needed 39 runs in 12 balls. He hit a four and a six off Tushar Deshpande. However, CSK could not score the 20 runs needed to win in the last over. Dhoni lost his wicket in the last over on the ball of Sandeep Sharma.
