After two decades of India-U.S. Civil Nuclear Agreement has been finalized now the construction of nuclear reactors in India seems possible. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) officially approved the deal on March 26 2024 granting the responsibility for nuclear reactor development in India to Holtec International. This agreement also known as 10CFR810 allows the American company to design and build nuclear reactors in India.
There is Indian connection to this development as Holtec International is led by Krishna P. Singh is originally from Bihar.
Who Is Krishna P. Singh?
Krishna P. Singh is an Indian-American entrepreneur engineer and the founder president and CEO of Holtec International. He is also a scientist of nuclear and clean energy solutions. Born in Barahiya Bihar now Singh has built a global reputation for his contributions to the nuclear energy sector. As of 2024 his net worth is reportedly Rs 1710779000000 ($20 billion USD).
Founding Holtec International
In 1986 twelve years after his marriage Krishna P. Singh laid the foundation for Holtec International in Mount Laurel New Jersey. The company initially focused on designing and manufacturing components for nuclear reactors like solutions for spent nuclear fuel management and dry cask storage containers.
Later on Holtec began supplying equipment for over 140 nuclear plants worldwide. Holtec International also started operational centers in New Jersey Florida Ohio and Pennsylvania.It has extended to to countries such as Brazil India Japan Mexico Poland South Africa Spain the UK and Ukraine.
One of Holtec’s acclaimed innovations is its investment in Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology. The SMR-160 and SMR-300 are considered the future of safe and cost-effective nuclear energy.
With the recent India-U.S. nuclear agreement Holtec has been given the authority to transfer its nuclear reactor technology to three Indian firms Holtec Asia Tata Consulting Engineers Limited and Larsen & Toubro Limited.
This allows these companies to develop small nuclear reactors in India.
Krishna P. Singh Education
He did bachelor of Science (BS) in Mechanical Engineering from BIT Sindri Ranchi University (India). He also did a master of science (MS) in Engineering Mechanics from the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) USA in 1969.
He took a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1972.
Singh married to Martha J. Trimble in 1974 and they have two children a 38-year-old daughter Amy and a 35-year-old son Krishna P. Singh Jr.
