Jakub Mensik Creates History; Becomes First Player In The World To...
Jakub Mensik caused one of the greatest upsets in
tennis history in the 2025
Miami Open final on Sunday (March 30) at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens after defeating
Novak Djokovic in the summit clash by a 7-6, 7-6 margin to clinch the maiden ATP title of his career.
Djokovic came into the match as hot favourite to end an almost eight-month drought without a trophy and clinch the 100th title of his career. However, the 19-year-old, who considers the Serbian as his childhood idol had other plans and pulled up a performance that will go down in the history books following a six-hour delay due to rain in the 'Magic City.'
Jakub Mensik Creates History
Winning any mean final at any stage of his career against Djokovic is among tennis's hardest task, as described by Mensik himself. The Czech Republic's teenage sensation has etched his name in the history books with his victory on Sunday that saw him win the first-ever ATP title of his career in only his second final by beating the six-time Miami Open champion.
Mensik is the lowest-ranked player Miami Masters' men's singles title in history and the first player to be ranked outside the top 50 (before the tournament began) to achieve the feat. Mensik was ranked 54th before coming to Miami and beat Tim Mayotte's record. Mayotte won the inaugural edition of the tournament in 1985 while being ranked 46th. Mayotte and Mensik are the only unseeded players in history to lift the elusive crown.
Meanwhile, Mensik is also the first teenage player ranked outside the top 50 to win an
ATP Masters 1000 tournament. The previous lowest-ranked player to achieve the feat was Michael Chang, who won the Toronto Open in 1990 while being ranked 24th in the world.
Overall, Mensik is the sixth-lowest ranked and ninth youngest player in history to win an ATP Masters 1000 event. He is the second youngest after Carlos Alcarez (aged 18 years, 333 days) in 2022 to win the title in Miami.
As per OPTA Ace, Mensik (aged 19 years, 199 days) is the first teenager to win six tie-breakers at an ATP Masters 1000 event. Before the Czech star, Goran Ivanisevic (22y 49 days) was the youngest to achieve the feat during the 19993 Paris Open.
The 19-year-old is also the first player to win 7+ tie-breakers while winning an ATP Masters event. He also won the semi-final against Taylor Fritz by a 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 margin. Earlier, he won the quarter-final against Arthur Fils 7-6, 6-1. Before that, he won his Round of 64 clash against Jake Draper with tie-break wins in both sets by a 7-6, 7-6 margin. The round of 32 clash against Roman Saifullin was the only match (6-4,6-4) in which Mensik did not need a tie-break to win the tournament.
Mensik is the first player outside the Top 50 of the rankings to beat Djokovic in an ATP tournament final since Stan Wawrinka in the 2006 Croatia Open final. Quite incredible, Mensik had not even celebrated his first birthday at that time.
After his victory in Miami, Mensik has risen to a career high 24th in the latest
ATP rankings.
