UGC Apprenticeship Guidelines: From the academic session 2025-26, all graduate students will have to compulsorily do an apprenticeship. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued the apprenticeship guideline for the first time in this regard, which will be implemented under the National Education Policy 2020. In this, work will have to be done to prepare students for employment in industries, increase coordination between the institute and the industry, and overcome the skill gap.
New guidelines for apprenticeship
Under the new guidelines, one to three semesters in a three-year degree and two to four semesters in a four-year degree program will be for apprenticeship. Students will also get 10 credit scores in a three-month apprenticeship. This step is being taken to connect students with employment opportunities.
Registration process for institutions
Higher education institutions will be able to decide the seats of apprenticeship based on facilities available in the industries. Institutions will have to register directly on the portal of the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme for apprenticeship. For this, the stipend will also be received from the industry and the central government.
It is mandatory to write apprenticeship and credit on the mark sheet.
Under the guidelines, now information about apprenticeship and credit score will have to be written on the mark sheet of the students. The responsibility of providing apprenticeships will be of the concerned institute. There will be no apprenticeship in the first semester, but it will be mandatory in the last semester.
Importance of industry-related education
One of the main objectives of this initiative is to prepare students to work in industries. Higher education institutions will determine apprenticeship seats based on their available resources and facilities available in industries. Apart from this, stipends will also be provided by the central government and industries so that students can get financial assistance during apprenticeship.
