In a recent update, India has become the top country in the issuance of Australian Student Visa Grants for 2025. In February, India overtook China in the sector which marks a major shift in the trends of international education. As per data shared by the Australian government, more than 2,734 Indian students were granted visas to study in Australia during this period, surpassing the 2,398 visas issued to Indian students in January.
While China still led with 3,573 student visas in January, India’s numbers are quickly catching up. By February, India had become the top country for student visa approvals, with more than 5,000 student visas already issued for the year.
Let’s have a closer look:
Attracting Indian Students:
Australia has been a favourite destination for international students, especially for Indians. The country has also been trying to attract Indian students and the attempts have clearly been successful with the growing number of visa issuance. The Australian government and universities have launched myriad measures, such as scholarships, student exchange programs, and streamlined visa processes to attract more Indian students.
China’s decline
For a long time China has been leading the list but in February 2025, India took over to become the lead in student visa grants. Countries like Bangladesh and Nepal are not far behind. This shift showcases the growing importance of India as a major player in Australia’s international education sector.
Why Indian students are choosing Australia
In recent times, Indian students are attracted to Australian universities for many reasons including the quality of education, career opportunities and campus life. Some popular fields of study include IT, engineering, business, and healthcare.
Powering through India-Australia Educational bond
As of September 2023, over 122,391 Indian students were enrolled in Australian institutions, making India the second-largest provider of international students to Australia. Recruitment campaigns, online counseling, and collaborations between Australian universities and Indian schools have further added to the growing trend.
With the Australian government planning to cap overseas student intake at 270,000 in 2025, experts predict that India will continue to be a prime source of international students. As Australia remains a top destination for higher education, Indian students can expect continued support, easy visa procedures, and numerous opportunities to enhance their academic and professional prospects in the country.
