The Uttarakhand government has started its preparation to deal with the possible water crisis in the summer season. The state’s drinking water department has given special emphasis to ensure uninterrupted power supply, adequate voltage to drinking water tube wells as well as pumping schemes. Besides, the department has also focussed on the use of STP treated water in construction and other works and keeping the pipelines in good condition.

Shailesh Bagauli, secretary of the department of drinking water and sanitation, has given necessary instructions to all the District Magistrates in this regard. He has directed them to get repaired the leakage of pipelines by running a campaign in the first fortnight of April. He also directed them to work in coordination with the concerned departments. Proper cleaning of TSP reservoirs and other types of water structures located in other areas including the Yatra route should be ensured, according to a release.

As per the direction of the drinking water department, dry wash/recycling should be done in all vehicle service centres to prevent wastage of drinking water. The tanker distribution system of the filling point should be inspected every day for supply of the water. It should also be ensured that cleaning, painting, leakage repair etc. of tankers is done smoothly. Water quality should also be taken care of on priority.

All tube wells/pumping schemes should get uninterrupted power supply at appropriate voltage, the release said. In this connection, the secretary of the department of drinking water and sanitation has requested the energy secretary to issue necessary instructions to the departmental officers. The General Manager of Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan had informed that in summers, the operation of tube wells and pumping schemes is often affected due to low voltage and power disruptions. To avoid problems in summers, the expected cooperation of the Electricity Department is also required.

The drinking water secretary has instructed all the district magistrates to set up a control room at the district level for quick resolution of drinking water complaints. Complete details of consumers' complaints will be recorded in the control room along with the conversation with them. It will be reviewed regularly to see whether the consumer's complaint is being resolved or not.
