Washington, DC: According to CNN, US President Donald Trump will hold his first Rose Garden news conference of his second term on April 2, which he has called “Liberation Day,” to present a new tariff proposal.
The complete cabinet will attend the event, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Monday. However, the details of the plan are still unknown since Trump and his administration have put up a number of, sometimes contradictory, suggestions in recent weeks.
“Wednesday, it will be Liberation Day in America, as President Trump has so proudly dubbed it,” Leavitt said. “A tariff proposal that would reverse the unjust trade practices that have been defrauding our nation for decades will be announced by the president. He is acting in the American worker’s best interest.
Trump may implement reciprocal tariffs, which would equal the tariff rates of other nations on American products, according to Leavitt. She cited Canada’s 250 percent tariff on US dairy goods as one example of what the administration considers to be exorbitant international tariffs. Leavitt maintained that such tariffs hurt US companies even though they often lead to less commerce rather than large tax collections.
“This makes it virtually impossible for American products to be imported into these markets, and it has put a lot of Americans out of business and out of work over the past several decades,” she said. “So it’s time for reciprocity, and it’s time for a president to take historic change, to do what’s right for the American people, and that’s going to take place on Wednesday.”
Notwithstanding the impending announcement, the government has not made it clear which tariffs would be applied. According to CNN, Trump and his advisors have been debating a number of policies over the last several weeks, such as reciprocal tariffs on all nations, postponing the implementation of 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, and imposing duties on copper, timber, microchips, and medicines.
Some authorities, including Trump himself, have hinted that the tariffs may be more lenient, while others have suggested that only certain nations would be impacted. Trump said last week that the tariffs would be “far more generous” than those that other countries had placed on the US. aboard Sunday, however, he said aboard Air Force One that “his reciprocal tariffs would be put in place on all countries as a starting point and then he’d negotiate them down if necessary.”
With the specifics of Trump’s tariff policy still up in the air, Wednesday’s announcement will be a significant turning point in his economic plan.
The Rose Garden news conference is anticipated to lay out the parameters of Trump’s future trade policy, as the administration has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling what it perceives to be unfair trade practices.
