BISHOP, Calif., April 1, 2025 — A fast-moving wildfire dubbed the Silver Fire has scorched 1,250 acres in eastern California, prompting evacuations, road closuresand a massive emergency response amid dangerous wind conditions. The blaze erupted Sunday afternoon north of Bishopa remote town located between Yosemite National Park and Death Valley National Parkaccording to Cal Fire.

Zero Containment as Winds Intensify Fire

As of Monday morning, the Silver Fire remains 0% containedwith strong winds continuing to complicate firefighting efforts. The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for the region through Monday evening, warning of gusts up to 65 mph that could down trees and power lines and rapidly spread embers.

The fire is actively threatening structures, critical infrastructure, endangered species habitats, watersheds, and cultural and heritage resources,” Cal Fire said in an official statement posted to social media.

Evacuations and Closures Ordered

Evacuation orders have been issued in You county and Mono Countyas the fire moved dangerously close to rural communities. A 30-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 6 has also been closed due to reduced visibility and the fire’s proximity to the roadway.

Cal Fire reported that no injuries have been recorded as of late Sunday night, but authorities remain on high alert as the blaze continues to expand.

Aircraft Grounded, Resources Surging

Efforts to contain the Silver Fire have been hampered by weather conditions. Firefighting aircraft were grounded on Sunday due to unsafe wind speeds, significantly slowing aerial suppression efforts.

Cal Fire has “significantly increased” personnel and equipment in the area in an effort to contain the growing fire front. Images and videos released by the agency show roaring flames engulfing dry grasslands beneath snow-capped mountain rangesa stark reminder of California’s volatile wildfire landscape.

What’s Next

With winds expected to remain strong through Monday evening, officials are urging residents in nearby areas to stay alert and be prepared for additional evacuation orders. The cause of the Silver Fire remains under investigation.
