Traffic on the M4 was facing severe delays of up to 90 minutes on Tuesday evening.

The major motorway was partially closed in Berkshire, between junctions 12 for Reading and 13 for Newbury. The closure was due to a large spillage.

Drivers were told to avoid the area and take alternative routes.

Lanes 1 and 2 (of 3) were closed on the M4 westbound between J12 Reading and J13 Newbury due to a collision.

National Highways said: "Recovery is underway and specialist crews are working to clear a large spillage from the carriageway. There are delays of up to 90 minutes on the approach. If these delays impact on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey."

They later added that specialist contractors advised that resurfacing works were required and will be completed overnight.
