The Gujarat Titans ended Royal Challengers Bengaluru's unbeaten run in the Indian Premier League 2025 as they handed them their season's first defeat on Wednesday, April 2. The Titans chased down the middling total of 170 without much of an issue, with Jos Buttler starring with a half-century.
RCB's homecoming didn't bring out the desired result that they wanted. The Rajat Patidar's side was unbeaten in both their opening two away games against Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings and looked for a hat-trick of wins. However, GT washed those hopes out with an easy win.
RCB put up 169/8 batting first on what looked like a bit of a wo-paced pitch, with slower balls being difficult to put away. RCB lost talisman Virat Kohli early in the second over to Arshad Khan before losing Devdutt Padikkal to Mohammed Siraj in the next over.
They were pushed on the back foot in the powerplay when they lost their other opener, Phil Salt, too inside the first six. Salt smashed Siraj for an out-of-the-park six, a 105m hit that got the Chinnaswamy crowd erupting. However, Siraj was quick to weave his magic yet again, as he castled the hard-hitting Englishman on the next ball.
Liam Livingstone played with strong intent and found some strong hits during his half-century. His 54-run knock from 40 balls was laced with five sixes and one four as he pushed the score for RCB alongside Jitesh Sharma (33) and Tim David (32).
In contrast, the Titans began the chase cautiously, knowing it was seaming around a bit. Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck in his third over when he removed GT skipper Shubman Gill for a run-a-ball 14. However, Sai Sudharsan held his end firmly and had a strong association with Jos Buttler. The duo put up a stand of 75, which nearly killed the game before Sudharsan was caught by wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma while trying to sweep Josh Hazlewood.
Buttler and impact sub Sherfane Rutherford took the initiative and kept GT's boat sailing through. They put up an unbeaten stand of 63 runs as GT crossed the line with eight wickets in hand and 13 balls to spare.
