New Delhi: Yashasvi Jaiswals unexpected transfer from Mumbai to Goas cricket association has surprised the Indian cricket community. The 23-year-old batsman submitted a transfer request which was promptly approved and he will play for Goa starting in the 2025-26 season. While theres potential for a captaincy role his international commitments may limit his availability for Goa. It was a very tough decision for me. Whatever I am today is because of Mumbai. The city has made me who I am and all my life I will be indebted to the MCA Jaiswal told The Indian Express. Goa has thrown me a new opportunity and it has offered me a leadership role. My first goal will be to do well for India and whenever Im not on national duty I will be playing for Goa and try to make them go deep into the tournament. This was an (important) opportunity which came my way and I just took it. Following BCCI regulations mandating domestic play for all Indian players unless on national duty Jaiswals most recent match was for Mumbai against Jammu and Kashmir in a Ranji Trophy Group A league game played from January 23rd to 25th. Yes it is surprising. He must have thought of something to make such a move. He has requested us to relieve him and we have accepted his request” a senior MCA official told PTI on Wednesday. “He wants to play for us and we welcome him. He will be playing for us from the next season” Goa Cricket Associations secretary Shamba Desai told PTI talking about Jaiswals move. When not representing his country Jaiswal is a strong candidate to lead the Goa team. Yes that can happen” he replied when asked if Jaiswal could be a captaincy candidate for the state. He plays for the Indian cricket team so he can be the captain and we will work in the direction to appoint him. Regarding his availability (for the domestic competitions) we are yet to speak” he added. Arjun Tendulkar and Siddhesh Lad preceded Jaiswal as Mumbai cricketers who recently relocated to Goa. Before the 2022-23 season Lad and Tendulkar relocated to Goa. After a suspension right-handed batsman Lad rejoined the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team last season. Since his Test debut against the West Indies in July 2023 Yashasvi Jaiswal has consistently opened for India playing 19 matches and delivering strong performances.
