Washington, DC: US President Donald Trump said that a 10% tax will be applied to all nations, starting on April 5, after announcing global tariffs. Higher, customized tariffs will also be applied to nations having the biggest trade imbalances with the US as of April 9.

“President Trump is invoking his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 (IEEPA) to address the national emergency posed by the large and persistent trade deficit that is driven by the absence of reciprocity in our trade relationships and other harmful policies like currency manipulation and exorbitant value-added taxes (VAT) perpetuated by other countries,” the White House stated in a fact sheet titled “President Donald J. Trump Declares National Emergency to Increase our Competitive Edge, Protect our Sovereignty, and Strengthen our National and Economic Security.”

“President Trump will impose a 10% tariff on all countries using his IEEPA authority,” it continued. At 12:01 a.m. EDT on April 5, 2025, this will go into effect.

The information sheet went on to say, “President Trump will impose a customized reciprocal higher tariff on the nations with the biggest trade deficits with the United States.” The initial 10% tariff baseline will still apply to all other nations. At 12:01 a.m. EDT on April 9, 2025, this will go into effect.

Until President Trump concludes that the danger presented by the trade imbalance and underlying nonreciprocal treatment has been fulfilled, addressed, or minimized, tariffs will continue to be in place.

The fact sheet added, “Today’s IEEPA Order also contains modification authority, allowing President Trump to increase the tariff if trading partners retaliate or decrease the tariffs if trading partners take significant steps to remedy non-reciprocal trade arrangements and align with the United States on economic and national security matters.”

Notably, on Wednesday (local time), Trump declared new import duties, laying out the rates that would be applied to nations worldwide. India will be subject to a 26 percent levy.

Trump said at the Make America Wealthy Again Event that the US only levies a 2.4% motorcycle tax on other nations. In the meanwhile, Thailand and other countries charge much higher prices—60%, 70%, 75%, and even more than that in India and Vietnam, respectively.”

The US president also said that all cars manufactured abroad will be subject to a 25% levy. “These terrible disparities have destroyed our industrial foundation and jeopardized the security of our country. This disaster is not at all the fault of these other nations. I hold previous leaders and presidents accountable for their failure to do their duties. “We will impose a 25% tariff on all automobiles made in other countries, effective at midnight,” Trump said.

China (34 percent), the European Union (20 percent), Vietnam (46 percent), Taiwan (32 percent), Japan (24 percent), India (26 percent), the United Kingdom (10 percent), Bangladesh (37 percent), Pakistan (29 percent), Sri Lanka (44 percent), and Israel (17 percent) are the other key nations with import duties.
