In a post on X, the IDF said, “The IDF struck military capabilities that remained at the Syrian bases of Hama and T4, along with additional remaining military infrastructure sites in the area of Damascus in the past few hours.” It said, “We will continue to operate to remove any threat to Israeli civilians.”

Al Jazeera, citing the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), said Wednesday’s assaults targeted the airport in the Syrian city of Hama and the area around the scientific research center in the capital’s Barzeh neighborhood.

Since Bashar al-Assad was overthrown in December 2024, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes across Syria.

The UK-based monitoring organization Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said Israeli troops bombed the Barzeh research station, which Israel says was engaged in the creation of chemical weapons and guided missiles, after al-Assad’s ouster on December 8.

Israel has carried out more than 500 airstrikes on Syrian sites between December 8 and December 31, 2024, according to SOHR. Furthermore, according to Al Jazeera, Israel has launched at least 43 assaults in Syria this year.

Following the announcement of a transitional administration and the appointment of 23 ministers to a diverse new cabinet, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa launched the Israeli attacks.

Al Jazeera reports that Yarub Badr, an Alawite, is the minister of transportation in the administration that was unveiled on Saturday. Amgad Badr, a member of the Druze sect, will be in charge of the ministry of agriculture.

A caretaker ministry led by al-Sharaa has been in charge of Syria since the overthrow of dictator Bashar al-Assad in December. He promised to form an inclusive transitional administration to restore Syria’s institutions and run the nation until elections, which he said may take up to five years, after being appointed temporary president in January.
