The resolution was supported by four Republican senators: Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Rand Paul of Kentucky. Their backing followed Trump’s announcement that he would raise tariffs on products from a number of nations, including China, Vietnam, and Japan, and slap a 10% tax on all imports.

“Today, I voted to terminate the emergency declaration put in place to justify higher tariffs on Canadian imports,” Murkowski said in a post on X. Even if not all Canadian trading policies are equitable, I am well aware of the harm that tariffs might do to Alaskan people and companies if they raise the price of necessities.”

The motion was presented by Democrats as an appeal for Trump to cease intensifying his trade fight with Canada, one of the country’s largest trading partners. According to The Hill, they predicted that Trump’s tariffs on Canada will affect an estimated 6.5 million jobs nationwide.

Notably, Trump has levied 25% tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum in addition to 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

On Wednesday (local time), Trump announced new import duties, detailing the rates that will be applied to nations worldwide. India would be subject to a 26% tax.

During his speech at the Make America Wealthy Again Event, Trump made the announcement.

“The United States charges other countries only a 2.4 tariff on motorcycles,” Trump said on the occasion. In the meanwhile, Thailand and other countries charge much higher prices—60%, 70%, 75%, and even more than that in India and Vietnam, respectively.”

The US president also said that all cars manufactured abroad will be subject to a 25% levy.

“These terrible disparities have destroyed our industrial foundation and jeopardized the security of our country. This disaster is not at all the fault of these other nations. I hold previous leaders and presidents accountable for their failure to do their duties. “We will impose a 25% tariff on all automobiles made in other countries, effective at midnight,” Trump said.

China (34 percent), the European Union (20 percent), Vietnam (46 percent), Taiwan (32 percent), Japan (24 percent), India (26 percent), the United Kingdom (10 percent), Bangladesh (37 percent), Pakistan (29 percent), Sri Lanka (44 percent), and Israel (17 percent) are the other key nations with import duties.
