With a career-high 61 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists, Nikola Jokic recorded the highest-scoring triple-double in NBA history. However, it was unable to prevent the Denver Nuggets from losing to the Minnesota Timberwolves 140-139 in overtime at Ball Arena.
The three-time MVP broke the previous mark set by Russell Westbrook, a colleague of his from the Nuggets, who had a triple-double with 57 points for the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2017.
In the last seconds of overtime, with the Nuggets up 139-138, Westbrook had a chance to win the game but missed a layup with 10 seconds left. Then, with 0.1 seconds remaining, he fouled Nickeil Alexander-Walker on a desperate three-point shot, which was a horrible twist of destiny. The Timberwolves pulled off a spectacular comeback when Alexander-Walker coolly made two of his three free throws.
Despite missing two important players, Naz Reid and Donte DiVincenzo, who were serving bans after a fight with the Detroit Pistons earlier in the week, Minnesota managed to win. The Nuggets are still in third place in the Western Conference, while the Timberwolves moved up to seventh place with the victory.
Another generational talent took center stage elsewhere. The Golden State Warriors defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 134-125 at FedEx Forum thanks to a spectacular 52-point effort from two-time MVP Stephen Curry, who turned back time with a masterclass in three-point shooting.
According to an NBA report, the four-time NBA champion and Warriors player also overtook both Rick Barry (retired) and LeBron James (active), tying Damian Lillard (active) for the sixth-most career 50-point games in NBA history (15).
