Mumbai: On the seventh day of Chaitra Navratri, devotees worship Maa Kaalratri (Maa Kalratri or Maa Kalaratri), the fiercest and most powerful form of Goddess Durga. According to the Devi Bhagavata Purana, she is considered a manifestation of Maa Kali, known for her ability to bestow immediate results upon her devotees, especially in this age of Kaliyuga. She is revered by different names such as Bhadrakali, Dakshina Kali, Matri Kali, and Mahakali, each representing various aspects of her divine power.

Maa Kalratri, the seventh manifestation of Goddess Durga, is revered as the one who dispels darkness and brings forth light. Her name is a combination of two words: ‘Kala’, signifying time or death, and ‘Ratri’, meaning night.

She is often portrayed with a dark complexion, intense fiery eyes, and unkempt hair. Seated on a mule, she wields a sword and an iron hook, while flames emanate from her breath. Despite her fierce and formidable appearance, Maa Kalratri is a compassionate guardian, granting her devotees the strength and courage to overcome life’s hardships.

Maa Kaalratri is a symbol of destruction against evil forces and a protector of the righteous. Worshipping her on the 7th day of Navratri is considered highly auspicious, as it helps devotees overcome fear, negative energies, and inner struggles. Devotees believe that her divine energy shields them from harm and grants them the courage to face life’s challenges.

Maa Kalratri Story

According to legend, two formidable demons, Shumbh and Nishumbhalong with their allies Chanda, Munda, and Raktabeejunleashed devastation across the three worlds, spreading chaos and destruction. Despite repeated efforts, no one could defeat them, and their tyranny only grew stronger.

Seeing no other option, Lord Indra and other celestial beings sought the help of Maa Parvati. Moved by their distress, she manifested Maa Chandi, a fierce warrior Goddess, to confront the demons.

Maa Chandi fearlessly engaged Shumbh and Nishumbh in battle and ultimately vanquished them. However, overcoming Chanda, Munda, and Raktabeej proved challenging due to the divine boons they had received.

To counter this, Maa Chandi transformed into her most ferocious form—Maa Kaalratri. She swiftly defeated Chanda and Munda, earning the title Chamunda.

However, Raktabeej posed a greater challenge, as his boon from Lord Brahma ensured that every drop of his spilt blood would give rise to a new clone of him.

To stop his relentless regeneration, Maa Kaalratri devised a brilliant strategy—she drank his blood as she fought, preventing it from touching the ground. This decisive action ultimately led to Raktabeej’s defeat, restoring peace and balance to the universe.

Her worship is considered incomplete without reciting or listening to her legendary story, as it reminds devotees of her divine might and the triumph of good over evil.
