Plot twists and unanswered queries have left enthusiasts piecing together why Helena Eagan (Britt Lower) may have opted for severance initially, with a pivotal 'clue' emerging in the exhilarating season two finale.

The gripping close of the series, witnessing Mark S (Adam Scott) choosing Helly R over his own wife Gemma (Dichen Lachman), sparked an avalanche of fan theories.

As viewers dissect Jame Eagan's (Michael Siberry) unnerving remarks regarding his daughter in their closing exchange, speculations arise concerning his acknowledgement that Kier no longer seems to favour Helena, yet perhaps finds a spark in her innie Helly.

Reddit user @LavenderPillow5 has proposed a theory that might just fill the gaps about Helena's decision to sever.

"There's a big question at the heart of the series that I feel has not yet been comprehensively explained: Why did Helena Eagan sever? After watching the finale, I've got the beginnings of a (possibly crazy) theory," they wrote.

"The answer we've been given up to this point is that Helena did it as a publicity stunt to boost public confidence in the procedure. That may be partially 'true', but it doesn't totally explain why either Helena personally or Lumon as a corporation would be willing to take the risk.

"She's the heir to the company--if something goes wrong, chaos ensues. You're really gonna risk brain surgery and the implications of a severed consciousness on the future CEO with Eagan blood coursing through her veins for a publicity stunt?"

The fan pointed out that earlier in Season 2, Helena's autonomy was questioned when she was pressured to lift the Glasgow block, allowing her innie to return to work despite her concerns about the risks involved. This suggested that Helena wasn't entirely in control.

Furthermore, the conversation between Jame and Helly's severed floor in the final episodes hinted that there might be another motive behind Helena's decision to undergo severance.

The fan proposed a theory that Helena's decision was not merely a publicity stunt, but part of a more complex plan devised by her father, Jame. Concerned about his age and the future of Lumon, Jame might see Helena's innie as a "rebooted" version of her, unencumbered by her past.

According to this theory, Jame believes this new persona could revitalize the company with fresh ideas and creativity. However, the plot thickens as Helly, far from being a mere pawn, turns defiant and jeopardises the corporation's schemes.

At the same time, Jame seems to have an epiphany that Helena's inner self might hold the key to Lumon's destiny, opting to return her to the severed floor following her brush with death by drowning. Is it possible he's plotting to mould Helena's inner persona to fit his grand design for Lumon?

The Reddit commenter even suggested that Harmony Cobel may attempt to curry favour with Lumon once more by reintegrating Helena and Helly.

Yet, they also point out that the season's climax hints at Jame's preference for Helly to eventually "take the reins of Lumon" over Helena, reports .

Conversely, another enthusiast offers a more straightforward theory, remarking: "I mean, the much much simpler explanation would be that she is the daughter of an unloving bats*** cultist and heir apparent to an evil biomedical research company so she chose to sever to escape that world for a little while everyday."

But just what are Jame's grand ambitions for Lumon and his daughter? The answer awaits in season 3.
