presenter was forced to shut down a heated debate between Welsh MPs Rhun ap Iorwherth Mims Davies and Labour politician Sir Chris Bryant. During Thursday's instalment (April 3) of the politics evening show, the 60-year-old broadcaster quizzed MPs about the welfare bill and PIP - personal independence payments.

She asked Rhun: "Do you think the welfare bill is too large and if you do, what should be done about it?" Attempting to avoid the question, he replied: "Listen, I think we should always be looking for ways to make the welfare system work effectively." Fiona pressed: "But do you think the welfare bill needs to be smaller?" as Rhun went on: "I agree that we need to help people get into work. Let's ask this question-" The presenter cut him off, pushing him to give a straight answer, which he finally gave.

He said: "Yes, absolutelty it should be smaller" to which the TV star explained: "So that will mean fewer people will have it." He went on: "Let's turn it on its head.

"Why take the decision to take money out of the pockets of people who need that support - and we're just going to damage our economies by the way because every pound is pounds spent in local economies - why not think of other political options like to bring in a wealth tax?

"I want Labour to take preventative spending in England and Wales now that would change life chances and make sure that people don't end up in poverty. Labour has cut the preventative spend budget.

"I believe in Wales, and I don't believe in selling Wales short and leaving us with a democratic defecit compared to those living in England and Scotland. Why should we stand for that?" as Mims Davies chimed in in agreement.

It was at this point that Fiona was forced to interrupt as she turned to Labour MP Chris, insisting: "Alright hang on you pair, otherwise this will just be a conversation between you two which is fascinating of course but let's bring in Chris.

He began: "I just want to respond to one thing because it's really important. Nobody is taking money away from people on PIP. A lot of people in my constituency are on PIP. There will be more people on PIP in the next few years than there are now, but the number isn't going to be increasing by 1000 every week".

Fiona added: "I just want to make sure that I've got this, so nobody on PIP - personal independence payments - now are going to lose it, nobody." Chris replied: "They're not going to until their next reassessment."

As the audience booed, Rhun errupted: "Of course they are, it's smoke and mirrors." The Labour MP sighed: "Rhun, honestly, 90 per cent of people will not lose anything from their PIP. I know there are people that are worrying that they're going to lose benefits in the next week or few - that is simply untrue".

Rhun added: "So the delay is okay, they're just bringing it a bit later" to which Chris snapped: "Rhun, don't behave like a child on this. It's really important that people are not irresponsible and scaremongering about it. The people who are presently in receipt of PIP will be getting their PIP support until their next assessment which might be in 2029, then they may."
