Star kids are often overshadowed by the stardom of their parents. Till date debut of an actor who belongs from a family of highly regarded actors filmmakers are scrutinised and immediate comparisons are drawn. And that does not give the ticket to the journey of success. Some of these actors make it big and bright while some fade away in the stars. One such star kid in question son of a legendary actor who made his Bollywood debut with Sridevi in 1983.
During that time Sridevi was an emerging name in the Hindi cinema scape. She was already an established and famed personality in south industry. The actor in focus is Kunal Goswami. He is the son of an actor who was a man of many hats Manoj Kumar.
Kunal Goswami grew up witnessing the growth of his father who was not just an actor but a film director screenplay writer etc. Goswami made his film debut as a child artist in the film Kranti that was released in 1981. It was a historical drama featuring Manoj Kumar Shashi Kapoor Shatrughan Sinha Hema Malini Parveen Babi in pivotal roles. In the film Kunal essayed the character of Bharat (Manoj Kumar) and Meenakshis (Hema Malini) son.
Later he was seen in Ghungroo released in 1983. In same year his film as a lead character was released cast opposite Sridevi. The movie was titled Kalakaar. It was a romantic tragedy and musical drama that did not become a commercial success. While neither Ghungroo or Kalaakaar became superhits titles the song Neele Neele Amabr Pe sung by Kishore Kumar became superhit. It is often found in the playlists of the millennials!
Goswami continued his pursuits in acting and signed projects - Do Gulab (1983) Ricky (1986) Aakhri Baazi (1989) and Paap Ki Kamaee (1990) Numbri Aadmi and Vishkanya in 1991. Most of these failed to perform on the box office and did receive critical acclaim either. He essayed the character of Inspector Laxman in Govinda and Shatrughan Sinha starrer Aakhri Baazi but it did not give the boost he was hoping for.
Apart from films he tried hi hands in the television industry and worked in Bharat Ke Shaheed Kitty Party and Parampura but he couldn’t succeed there as well.
Eventually he stepped away from the showbiz and took a hiatus for several years. He made a comeback in 1991 starring in his fathers production Jai Hind. Despite the ensemble cast it did not fare well either and was the last film directed by Manoj Kumar.
Taking it as the final nail in the coffin he quit acting and ventured out to establish his business in catering. Reportedly he made quadruple progress soon and now runs a successful and powerful venture as a caterer.
Kunal Goswami addressed the media on April 4 2025 and shared the news of the unfortunate demise of his father in the wee hours of Friday. Manoj Kumar was a legend and left an edible mark in the industry . His void will be felt forever.
