Bangkok: As he met with Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and spoke about bilateral relations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Friday that India is doing all in its power to help the people of the nation that was rocked by the earthquake. On the fringes of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral and Technical Cooperation (BIMSTEC) summit, PM Modi met with Senior General Min, the head of Myanmar’s military administration.
“I met Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing while attending the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok. reaffirmed their condolences for the deaths and property losses caused by the recent earthquake. In this crucial moment, India is doing all it can to support our Myanmar sisters and brothers,” Modi wrote on X. “We also discussed bilateral relations between India and Myanmar, particularly in sectors like connectivity, capacity building, infrastructure development and more,” he said.
A regional project, the BIMSTEC organization consists of nations in India’s immediate neighborhood. India started Operation Brahma to aid rescue operations in Myanmar, which was struck by an earthquake and where Senior General Min came to power in a military coup in February 2021.
The main goal of BIMSTEC is to increase connectivity among its member countries, and Myanmar is seen as a gear in the wheel for its success. Every major project that connects the member countries goes through Myanmar, where local governments have little authority over various areas of the nation.
Myanmar now has a chance to interact with the international world as it looks for humanitarian aid to help it rebuild from the devastating earthquake. The earthquake in Myanmar has claimed the lives of over 3,000 people, wounded about 5,000, and left over 370 others missing nationally. A formal dinner for the heads of the BIMSTEC countries—which also include Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Myanmar—was also attended by Senior General Min.
According to the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at Thursday’s ministerial discussions, BIMSTEC members spoke about disaster management.
